We are currently seeking submissions for Guided Reading Levels R through Z. Manuscripts should comprise 800–1,200 words for Levels R through T or 1,200–1,800 words for Levels U through Z.
In all submissions, we are looking for creative, well-written, authentic narratives that highlight a distinct voice and an imaginative approach to storytelling.
Fiction can include most genres, including realistic fiction, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and historical fiction. Regardless of genre, we are looking for stories that afford readers the opportunity to make inferences and engage with texts. We especially appreciate stories that reflect the identities and experiences of diverse and underrepresented populations, nontraditional family structures, and characters with disabilities. Please note that authors are under no obligation to arrange for illustrations.
Graphic novel proposals should take the form of a script. Please note that authors are under no obligation to arrange for professional illustrations, line art, or storyboarding.
Nonfiction should address science, nature, or social studies topics that align with what readers ages 8 to 12 can be expected to understand. Manuscripts should follow the format of our Explore the World series, which includes a variety of visual elements such as maps, charts, and diagrams along with several recurring styles of text callouts. At the moment, we are specifically looking for books that concern milestones of American history: traditional Native American culture, the European settlement of America, the Colonial period, the Revolution and the introduction of democracy, slavery and the Civil War, pioneers, the Industrial Revolution, World War II, changing roles for women, and civil rights. Authors are under no obligation to arrange for photographs.
Writers are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with our catalog prior to submitting.
